Share Exercise with Your Children

By Tracy Morgan, Director of the Cybex Institute

Child Exercising

Studies have shown that parents who exercise and participate in physical activity have kids that do the same. All parents want their kids to be healthy and fit - so why not do your part by modeling good behaviors. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Take a hike! And bring the kids! If you have a healthy back you can carry the little ones, the result to you will be an increase in caloric expenditure. They get a great view and an introduction to healthy behaviors at a young age! Older kids can walk on their own and experience first hand what healthy behaviors are all about.
  • Enroll them. Many gyms and health clubs have exercise programs for kids whose parents are working out. Get involved! You'll have time for yourself, time for your workout and your child will be getting physical activity too! If they are old enough set them up with a qualified personal trainer who has the knowledge and experience of working with developing youth.
  • Make it a family thing. Spending time as a family playing sports, working in the yard or even walking not only brings you all together in a quality fashion, but allows you all to experience the benefits of activity together!

You owe it to your children to provide them with the best possible options to stay healthy for their entire lives. Get moving and show them what health is all about!
